Seminary and the Faith to Move: An Open Letter to Those Contemplating Theological Education

Study

Dear Future Pastor,

I know you can’t see it, but God will take care of you.

You don’t know how you are going to pay for tuition.
You don’t know how you’re going to pay for housing.
You don’t know how you’re going to pay for food.

I get it.

You are afraid it will be too much.
You are afraid you won’t be able to handle the workload.
You are afraid you will do poorly.

I’ve been there.

You can’t see how it will come together.
You can’t see how it will work out.
You can’t see how it will be paid.

I know you can’t.

God knows all of your fears and God sees all of your future.

You can’t see the hand of God providing for you every step along the way.
You can’t see the professors you will learn from and need long after you leave.
You can’t see the friendships that will last for a lifetime of pastoral ministry.
You can’t see the wife you might meet.
You can’t see the character that will be built.
You can’t see the sanctification that will come.
You can’t see the love for the Word of God that will grow.
You can’t see the heart to shepherd that will develop.
You can’t see the weight of your calling that will deepen.
You can’t see the opportunities that will follow.
You can’t see the next generation that will need you to lead them.

You can’t see them because God often calls us to follow him by faith.

God will provide for you.
God will amaze you.
God will be glorified through you.

I know you can’t see it, but God does.

Have faith. Trust him. Pursue your calling. Find a way. Go and be trained.
